Eric Arvin: Galley Proof

Blems are hard to find because they re so locked up in ther people s minds and heartsLessons about themselvesit s a trap Vivien Leigh of mywn making I want the attention you see but I m scared to death when it s thereAnd lessons about loveas if love was a great blanket we were slowly unfurling through the night appreciating every stitch and every thread Every intricate and uniue pattern We kept By the Book ourselves warm wrapped up in itThis isne The Day After the Dollar Crashes: A Survival Guide for the Rise of the New World Order of those books that is like that great blanket I take it and appreciate it and wrap it around me and learn about myself some tooAnd thenShe nodded her head in approval and hesitantly shut the book breathing a reader s sigh That wonderful inhaleexhale reactionne does after finishing a book that has somehow touched you Completion Inner peace Separate peaceSo did I It didTom Excellent gay fiction with romantic elements about an author who lives a very predictable safe life ruled by lists and habit until his attractive new editor shakes things up As with so many books by Eric Arvin this book was simultaneously fun funny and thought provoking pretty much like life itself 45 rounded upFirst ff I must admit to being a bit perturbed by some f the ther reviews indicating there is cheating in this book r at the very least an pen relationship Those that know me know that cheating is not something I take lightly when reading MM and it truly does take a master to make me see past that That being said there is no cheating in this book There is no pen relationship in this book What there is in this book is a journey f self discovery Arvin s characters never end up in the same place they start in typically with life changing realizations that don t always depend n someone they fall in love with That s why I enjoy his books because the MC doesn t need a man to make everything better he needs to learn to trust in himself to make things betterArvin s wit and humor are n full display here throughout the novel from fanged vaginas to computers taking ver the world I TOLD YOU I enjoyed the second half as much as the first when it turned into almost a travelogue story as the MC heads to Europe The supporting cast is eclectic and uirky and I especially love the side story with Janey and the war between the religious boys in her neighborhood That resolution The Teachings of Spenser Carlyle: The Novel of that sub plot was hilarious house fires and religious three waysThere was a bitf deus ex machina about the last uarter f the book and ex just happens to be in the same city in Europe that the MC is and imparts lasting wisdom at a critical juncture but I was able to verlook this given that you hear stories like that all the time a person was far away from home and they just happened to run into someone they knew Life can be weird like that sometimesAll and all another Arvin winner Highly recommended Hilarious start and lots f ddball humour I was chuckling for the first half The Message of Salvation: By God's Grace, for God's Glory of the story it was so funny and engaging But disappointingly the second partf the book didn t continue in the same vain it got a bit boring and I was disinterested about the end result Brock and Logan were not your average romantic couple and for me there was no burning hot chemistry between them and they never really appealed as a couple still an nice enough read too bad about the last half Anonymums of the story 3 35 starsLoughut loud funny in the first part f the book with hilarious dialoguebanteruotes and uirky characters got increasingly tiring in the second partHere the humor felt forced and repetitive there s a reason why slapstick moviesstories are r should be short and couldn t cover the weak plot any nly so much to tell about writer s block and falling in love with the editormade it hard to keep me interested and to finish the storyslightly disappointing This review contains major spoilersBy way f a prologue I would like to say that this is my first book by Eric Arvin and I truly find the man has potential for greatness He can be funny and witty and emotional and he can write Which is not a given for many published authors So I will keep an eye Practical Ventriloquism out for Eric Arvin sther workMy issue with this book though was that it seemed to want to say and achieve too much ending up being all ver the place And it was like it was written by two different people the first half by Noel Coward and the second half by Paulo Coelho Also it felt like it wanted to be a movie directed by Blake Edwards and with the theme music composed by Henry Mancini but had to make do with Nora Ephron and a soundrack f non riginal pop hitsMy pick My theme song for the first half f the book would be Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds It describes Logan Brandish s situation pretty accurately With his mildly successful career as a romantic writer and his neat predictable monotonous life his clean cut boy scout On Riemanns Theory of Algebraic Functions and Their Integrals of a boyfriend Curtis who loves cardboard boxes and that s pretty much all that excites him and the uiet completely unexciting small townf Adbury where he lives in a big Victorian house with his bestie Janey who has this thing for Jehovah s witnesses and Mormons By the way I Disclaimer the spoiler below is uite real not just a scene Night's Pawn or two If you read it you ll know the story line completelyview spoilerLogan had a nice stable life He had a stable albeit boring boyfriend Curtis had written some popular romance book Trouble and a female best friend Janey He hit a writer s block and at the same time the publisher sent a new editor Brock The gorgeous new editor kept telling him how crap his new book was even the manuscript that Logan felt good in writing was trashed so he abandoned it Brock told him to be gay andpen to new horizon But that s not Logan so he hit identity crisis Since he s attracted to Brock Logan broke up with Curtis which was not difficult since it turned Firing the First Elder (Pioneers in the Pulpit Book 2) out Curtis was assigned to be somewhere else by his company Logan and Brock started to sleep together However after bringing Logan to meet his family Brock told him that he s not ready for any relationship and it s better if Logan got a new editor They did that and kinda broke upThe new editor a sternlder lady again trashed Logan s manuscript which again threw Logan ff Remembering what Brock told him he decided to take vacation to Europe There he involved in sexual encounters with several Italian hunks and even two f them at the same time He forgot about his writing until ne day he met Curtis his ex boyfriend Curtis asked him what he s doing in Rome and why he didn t write any This made Logan realized his situation He called his editor and his best friend Janey saying he d stopped writing and abandoned the book completely Janey then came to Rome with Brock Brock said that in the past he pushed Logan when actually he was the ne who needed a new horizon Soon enough Logan s current editor also appeared in Rome not accepting Logan s decision to abandon the book It turned The Secret Child out she actually liked Logan s writings Like Brock before she just wanted to push him a bit to the directions she wantedLogan start to write again and be with BrockThat s it The endIt s not bad but I m not wowed by it Far from it Brock idea that Logan needs to change because he s not gay enough is horrible IMO After all gay people and those who are sympathetic to their cause always argue for diversity Here Logan had to change and conform with certain ideasf how gays supposed to be if he wanted to be authentic gay Uh Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno: Tokyo Teen Fashion Subculture Handbook oh The idea that people have to be shaken and change themselves to get new perspectivef life doesn t resonate with me especially here where change f life is associated with Logan s writer s block Both Brock and the current editor pushed Logan for no ther reason but to satisfy their wn wants Logan s previous book was a best seller There is no proof that his abandoned manuscript wouldn t be either since the reasons both editors pushed him had nothing to do with the writing itself as it turned ut later So his identity crises were the utcome f two manipulative editors with issues not from his writing Yes he had a writer s block but everyone whose job involved constant writings can attest that it happens a lot and it doesn t need a shaking to Death by Inferior Design overcome it Now if the successf an author is measured by 1 How much the author expresses himherself in the book and 2 the number f copies it s sold then with the abandoned manuscript Logan would be actually fine with 1 because he enjoyed writing it and possibly would get 2 as well So what s the identity crises are about to Logan as an author One f my pet peeves in any stories is deus ex machina Here there are two Hitler's Northern War: The Luftwaffe's Ill-Fated Campaign, 1940-1945 of them Curtis suddenly showed up in Rome and made Logan realized what he s doing and Brock conveniently showed up after everything with Logan s life had been uite stable following crises due to the editors suggestions Onef the main thing that gay people have to suffer from is bullying Bullying takes many form it doesn t always in the form f physical it can be emotional bullying Not necessary from direct bad words but also from being the bject f jokes f people who are making fun A Philosophy of Cinematic Art of them Throughout the book the author makes funf Jehovah Witness and Mormons I don t belong to those religions but I cringed when I was reading this book Oh come The Potato Hack: Weight Loss Simplified on Arthur it s just a joke Can t we have fun then So if some people enjoy making funf gays it s fine for them to do so I thought we re about respecting different way White House Years (Henry Kissingers Memoirs of life I just wish I knew it involves multiple partners Nothing wrong with that just not my cupf tea I wouldn t have bought this book if I knew it in advance The writing is f the book not consistent I felt a break between the early chapters and the later nes hide spoiler Logan Brandish is a successful laughing and really looking forward to getting to know Logan and Brock Unfortunately midway through it became a struggle and I found myself skimming through a lot f the book To me there was no chemistry between Brock and Logan the storyline with Janey made absolutely no sense as it did not add anything and seemed ut f place I thought when Logan took ff n his adventure it would pick up and the humor may return however I was mistaken and to me it was just a confusing mess f characters at the end Everybody has read those books usually they come with horrendous cover art that start with an apparent self ironic scene that tries to justify using a clich It s some trope that has been beaten hit struck battered hammered trashed pummelled and flattened to the ground ages ago And for a while it works The author works his ass ff and makes the first person past tense voice f his character sound like something hilarious something new refreshing and witty Then he crosses the line from a fine comedy to unadulterated spoof and ruins the effect If you the reader are very lucky the narrative still sounds entertaining enough to carry through to the end and lets you finish a book instead
