Age of Reason is ll bout existentialism Fiction nd philosophy inextricably nd entertainingly combined lmost rendering it page turner I had never previously come cross the guile nd craft of Sartre the rtist Bright Boys: The Making of Information Technology and only knew Sartre the philosopher whoseuthoritative philosophical monologues were curt nd declarative sans the resplendence of n rtistic canvas The vivacity nd vividness with which Sartre paints each one of his characters midst their existential exigencies leaves behind their ever lasting impressions on the fertile mental space Each name springs up in mind in color nd the ssociation with that color is complete character Badge 387: The Story of Jim Simone, America's Most Decorated Cop and the color inextricable from each other To me the biggestchievement of this uite Castle's Fortress a long tale has to be the control that Sartre exercises over his writing His charactersre god forsaken lot condemned bandoned nd carrying on their shoulders the burden of their freedoms This bandonment is of their own choosing or unavoidable because they Dating by the Book are conscious disgruntlednd bored individuals committed to denouncement of bourgeois nd the lives they lead The pain nd reclusiveness both self inflicted nd forced re only but One Sinful Night a small price to pay for the freedom they cherish Or is it The very disgustnd offence they inspire endears them ll the same This book sks uestions than it Dirty Professor answers creates doubts than it clarifies precisely leaves one in the lurch Those uninitiated with Sartre might just get too engrossed with the plot when the very essence of this work lies beneathll the love ffairs ffairs without love suicides or ttempts b Over the course of two days in Paris during hot summer in 1938 philosophy teacher Mathieu Delarue has crisis on his hands he needs to raise funds for n bortion so his life can retain the total freedom that he so dearly clings to ll the while there is circulating tension with the threat of war looming The Age of Reason captures this period in time very well but the overall narrative left me coldExpertly written yes but drags Melville; Shame Evil Eye: A Psychoanalytic Reading along in places Matthieu himself was deeply studied character nd felt like man stuck between Brody a rocknd Brody (Circle Eight, a hard place in histtempts to straighten his life outAn influential work rather than His Voice, His Command an enjoyable one it s probably masterpieceI have nothing gainst Satre he was great friends with Simone de Beauvoir one of my favourite writers but when it comes to the writings of existentialism I much prefer Camus An existentialist read t its finest This is n excellent novel bout unpleasant people with some unforgettable scenes Here s one of the ones I liked most Daniel strange character who has never managed to establish normal connection with the world has been hovering on the edge of suicide for some time He s finally decided he s going to do it But he can t just leave his three cats to starve to death so he puts them in Kid a wicker basketnd takes them down to the river to drown them The basket is too small Wait Till Next Year - A Memoir and he can hear them fightingnd complaining inside But of course it doesn t matter Venus in Sackcloth: The Magdelen's Origins and Metamorphoses any When he gets there he suddenly realises it s impossible He trudges back home with his heavy basketnd opens it The cats emerge looking very much the worse for wear His favourite has Iced Under a nasty scatch over her eye In the middle ofll the commotion he s lso managed to get himself scatched nd it hurts He feels utterly miserableIt s one of the most effective passages I know on the subject of why it generally isn t good idea to want to kill yourself I have led toothless life toothless life I have never bitten into nything I was waiting I was reserving myself for later on nd I have just noticed that my teeth have gone Reading The Age of Reason felt like navigating the dark recesses of my subconscious nd coming face to face with my innermost Within a Captains Hold (Captains of the Scarlet Night, anxieties If that soundswful that s because it kind of was I don t think I ve ever finished Butcher a book on such low note I lso don t think I ve ever finished book feeling so understood I could talk bout the plot but the plot doesn t matter it s the subtext that does this nagging regret of life not lived life that has mounted to nothing because of protagonist who bases every life decision on excessive forethought habit that steers him way from making ny decision on One Last Kiss a whimThis whole book isbout our freedom to make the choices we want to make but never do bout our deep need for change but secret desire to stay the same This constant battle between how things re nd how we want them to be causes us to lead life of limbo lways in between things but never picking side until we find ourselves No One Needs To Know at thege of reason that pivotal moment where making Selections From Great Works of Mawlana Jalal Al-Din Rumi a radical decision couldlter our lives forever But do we take that riskIt takes n incredible talent to be ble to write Kisses Don't Lie a thought provoking novel with so many multi dimensional characters in so few pages Itlso helps that the plot itself is interesting nd Sartre doesn t use words lightly Each word is chosen deliberately nd each sentence packs punch This is book that was written modestly but with Murder at Morningside absolute confidence in the message it was puttingcross nd it s book I definitely won t be forgetting Dead Perfect any time soon Soap opera with brains Yes I cangree with this Caring bout other people while watching their little lives nd dramas is so much fulfilling when they prove themselves to have complex despair behind their everyday Bones To Pick actions It never ends really The constant proving to oneself that this life is worthwhile that the hopes of the pastnd the dreams of the future won t go to waste Mathieu keeps to his belief of freedom to be capable of Clockworks and Corsets anything no matter what constraints have been laidcross his living by emotional bonds nd societal dictations nd past history In the end he chieves this freedom nd finds that he no longer believes in it He has reached the ge of reason when he sees that the ideas that once characterized him can no longer be pplied to him unless he wishes to be hypocrite In chieving his freedom he sacrificed for nothing New Girl on the Job a nothing that provides clean Restaurant Weeks Are Murder a break from everything that had been forcing him into situation that was no longer nd for what He may have found small satisfaction in not being free now that he had realized that he was waiting for moment of lifetime that would never come Everyone Her Wounded Warrior around him either spins out delusions of the future or chases desires that had died longgo joining him in his everlasting goal of not sinking into regret nd despair A satisfyingly realistic portrayal of the tightrope walk that daily life really is I had this job one summer t Dillard s department store I worked in the linens section Nobody shops for sheets in the summer I guess because I spent lot of time doing bsolutely nothing My boyfriend used to write me letters nd send me to work with them so that I would have something to read Well that got old so one day when I was poking One House Over (The Neighbors) around the props you know how they set up the entire fancy pants mock bedrooms I found copy of this book on table So I parked myself on stool out of the view of the non existent customers Between You and Me (The Harrisons, and started reading At the end of each day I put the book back on the little mock bedroom table I got fired before I finished the book but eventually picked upnother copy Cinderella and the Ghost (The Cursed Princes, and completed it A lot of people think Sartre is heavy but I found it to be uite enjoyable summer read Take it to the beach This is basically soap opera with brains nd direction which is my favorite kind of book ever The character development is EXTRAORDINARY I recommend this book on that facet lone I didn t read this s n exemplification of Sartre s philosophy but rather s study of the philosophy of the characters in the story None of these people re truly likable but they re ll the human because of that Even the most greeable people th The Essence of Freedom25 November 2013 This is probably one of the first Sartre books that I have read nd while I m not tearing through the bookshops nd libraries looking for of his work I must say that it was n interesting read I guess there re couple of reasons it took me so long to get to Sartre nd one of them would be that since lot of my friends were either Christians or basically didn t read then ll I would hear is how evil Killer Physique (Savannah Reid Mystery, and bad Sartre isnd that by reading Sartre you re playing very delicate game with the devil Hey I ve played Dungeons nd Dragons Magic the Gathering nd bucket load of computer games through most of my dult life Amish Homecoming as wells being involved with other things so I probably Enticing the Earl ask myself what on Earth could reading bit of Sartre do to me To nswer that simply bsolutely nothing Anyway this is what Sartre looks like Jewish German Revolution and here snother picture of him He doesn t look ll that scary to me Anyway this is one of those philosophy novels you know the type where philosophers write novel that contains lot of their philosophy nd that the main characters in the book sprout his philosophy you know the way that Plato would do with Socrates eve. N though Plato s philosophy Worth The Trade (More Than A Game, and Socrates philosophy tended to be two different things This novel is set over two days during the lead up to World War IInd is bout how guy named Matthieu is trying to get 4000 francs because he has ccidentally got his girlfriend pregnant nd he doesn t want to either grow up or become father which generally entails growing up nyway It is The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime alsobout this guy name Daniel who realises that he is homosexual but still wants to marry woman whom he is in love with because she wants to have children strange ttitude for homosexual to take I thought that would be what we would consider bi sexual but then The Closest Possible Union again this is 1945 so the intricacies of the modern sexual system sort of did not exist back then The story explores the concept of freedom butlso the concept of coming of ge This is not one of those rite to manhood type stories because with Sartre the coming of ge or in his words the ge of reason is when one reaches that stage in life if they ever reach that stage in life when they realise that it is time for them to take charge of their life nd to take responsibility for their Lost Princess actions Sometimesn event occurs such Postcards from Last Summer as in Matthieu s case with him getting his girlfriend pregnant which forces one toccept the responsibility Hot Shot ands some suggest grow up Other times it simply never happens The Industrial Revolution and the person simply ends up driftinground the world living in some sort of dream never Rock Bottom actually defining themselvesnd never having purpose or point This is the idea of existentialism nd remember that Sartre is considered the father of secular existentialism in that it is the definition of who we re It has two effects in that in one case existentialism is us making concerted effort to define ourselves such s me being the straight guy that pretends he knows nothing bout brothels nd sits in the Crown Casino reading book nd the outward effects of that definition in that people see who you re nd respond to this However the catch is that while we may define ourselves in many cases we re the only people who understand nd respond to that definition because everybody else perceives reality differently My Soul Then Sings and in perceiving reality differently we respond to reality differently Each of us has our own perception of ourselvesnd everybody Wildwood around us has their own perception of who were This does have potential to backfire though because the idea of defining oneself can pply only to that which can be perceived nd there re times when we try to create perception that does not work For instance the person who takes out massive loan for n impressive car nd spends money on things that they cannot Raiding with Morgan afford can find that when the money runs out or the creditors come knocking on their door they discover that the friends that they thought they hadre no longer round In essence they have not defined themselves s member of the high life but rather defined themselves s Lethal Licorice (Amish Candy Shop Mystery, a fraud So too with the person that talks themselves up There is limit to parading yourself Purses and Poison around in front of people because it gets to point where when somebody does that too much Rogue on the Rollaway and the stories become ever unbelievable theyre not t ll impressive but rather like septic tank For instance the phrase I can do that if I really wanted to but I m too much of n ethical person to do that says bsolutely nothing bout who you re other than somebody who is basically full of shit If you do not want to do that because you re too ethical you do not need to tell people that you do not want to do that but rather let your ethical nature come out based upon your ctions nd not upon the statements you make bout what you do not want to do Now there is nother essence to this book nd that is the essence of freedom The uestion that comes bout is what is freedom Can one be free yet live in totalitarian dictatorship My nswer to that uestion would be yes While the totalitarian dictatorship may ttempt to stifle your thoughts nd ctions it is the knowledge that no matter what they do they cannot really control your thoughts Haunted House Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery, and they cannot takeway your joy In Sweet Southern Hearts (A Willow Hill Novel Book 3) a high school essay I used the opening line freedom is state of mind freedom is lie The first statement is true because we may live in country that considers itself free but we may put ourselves in chains through the belief that we must behave in certain way nd in behaving in that certain way we re chaining ourselves to society s traditions While there re restrictions on what we can do such Daddy's Girl Series: A Taboo Erotic Collection as killing somebody in many cases we will restrain ourselves for fear of bringing the wrath of the state upon us The same goes with totalitarian dictatorship were we will self censure ourselves for fear that if we do not we may bring the wrath of the state upon us However the uestion of freedom is lways uestion of our mindset knowing that nobody can truly control what we think nd how we think nd that if we ct in certain way it is because we want to define ourselves Dark Tides (Dark Tides as suchs opposed to only Weathering the Storm acting in that way out of fear As such the statementbout freedom being Wrong for Me (Motor City Royals, a lie is statement made by n immature person me who was restricted in what he could do because he did not truly understand the nature of freedom Economic slavery is term that probably does not relate to this but it is defining our freedom based upon the Fiddle: One Woman, Four Strings, and 8,000 Miles of Music amount of money that we have We believe in way that the money that we have nd the finance industry loves to float those ideas the we believe that we re ble to do nd in doing so the joy we believe that we have However s I have said freedom is not defined by how much money we have because if we believe that freedom only comes through wealth then we re in fact enslaving ourselves to wealth because we believe that we can only have freedom if we have wealth Sartre lso explores the idea that marriage nd the family is form of slavery nd this is something that Matthieu feared I can relate to that especially with what happened when I was walking to church last night As I Left Fur Dead approached the church I saw this young ladynd rather intelligent one t that because we have talked bout post modernism nd not in Death by Tea a post modernism is evilnd bad sort of way carrying Loyalty and Lies (Chastity Falls, a baby Now this young lady is single so what that tells mebout this lady is that she wants to get married nd have family which immediately puts her off the list of By Way Of A Wager a potential wife if I ever chose to get married which I don t My thinking here reflects that of Matthieu in that I see marriagend family s being form of slavery nd in essence form of economic slavery since raising single child let When Kingdom Comes alone whole family is incredibly expensive especially if you want them to go to good school However my view of this that is getting married nd having children is that it is The Wayward Bride (Besotted Scots, also form of ordinariness which in way repugnates me I have walked into churches where I see these happy couples with their little baby in way showing it off to everybody Such a Dance and Im repugnated by it Previously it was because of jealousy that I was repugnated but now with my new church in my new city I m lot circumspect To me I may not feel joy for them because I generally do not base my happiness upon other people s joy but rather upon my own state of mind nd the freedom that I give myself through having control over my mind nd over my thoughts but I understand that is their choice nd that is to live the ordinary life There is nothing wrong with living n ordinary life however if there is one thing that I know bout myself nd that is that I La bte du marais am not interested in livingn ordinary life which probably has something to do with having played Dungeons Laos: Keystone Of Indochina and Dragons for much of mydult life Here is How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World a picture of baby The Age of Reason L ge de raison is 1945 novel by Jean Paul Sartre It is the first part of the trilogy The Roads to Freedom The novel set in the bohemian Paris of the late 1930s focuses on three days in the life of philosophy teacher named Mathieu who is seeking money to pay for n bortion for his mistress Marcelle Sartre Et ainsi de suite analyses the motives of various charactersnd their The Shoshoni Cookbook actionsnd takes into Historias sobre los Fondos Bahá'ís account the perceptions of others to give the reader comprehensive picture of the main character The novel is concerned with Sartre s conception of freedom Reasoning with the Infinite: From the Closed World to the Mathematical Universe as the ultimateim of human existence the existentialist notion of ultimate freedom through presenting Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don’t Know What You’re Eating and What You Can Do About It a detailedccount of the characters psychologies s they re forced to make significant decisions in their lives As the novel progresses character narratives espouse Sartre s view of what it means to be free nd how one operates within the framework of society with this philosophy This is one of many rather brief synopses that I found on this novel When first encountering these I wondered why they were so nondescriptive I now know why It really is not bout much than Mathieu parading round town meeting his friends looking for somebody to loan him the four thousand francs he needs for his mistress Marcelle s bortion. summary I found from Sonoma State University Sartre s Philosophies 1 Existence precedes essence Freedom is existencend in it existence precedes essence This means that what we do how we ct in our life
